Meaning: εύς ἐν Κύπρῳ H.). *ζήτωρ in ζητὸρων ζητούντων; ζητρόν τὸν δημόκοινον (`execurioner') H., with ζατρεύω ἐν μυλῶνι βασανίζω EM 408, 12 and ζητρεῖον τὸ τῶν δούλων κολαστήριον H., Phot., com. Herod.; after Hdn. Gr. 1, 372,7; 515,24 ζήτρειον.
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [501] *i̯eh₂- `search, require'
Etymology: The gloss is discussed most beautifully by García-Ramon, Compos. Indogerm. (in memoroam J. Schindler) 1999, 77-95, who shows that ζητήρ means `avenger' just as Ved. yātár- (I 32, 14ab). It is derived from yā- 2 `ask, pray, require, desire'. This meaning agrees well with that of ζητέω and further ζῆλος and ζημία `punshment'. The root was *i̯eh₂-.
